Talking Rationally About Rational Addiction
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper reviews the rational addiction (RA) model of Becker and Murphy (1988) (BM) to demonstrate how its conclusions are based on assumptions about model parameters. The BM analysis emphasises the existence of an unstable steady state but the presumption of instability imposes strong restrictions on model parameters and is unlikely. Moreover, with two steady states (one stable, one unstable) the stable steady state may correspond to a lower level of addiction than the unstable one, the reverse of the BM finding. This implies that the effects of price changes on consumption, can be distinct from those given by BM. Also while the relative size of long-run and short-run effects depends on adjacent complementarity and addiction depreciation as BM suggest, short-run effects of a price change are generally greater than envisaged by BM. Other features of the RA model such as ‘cold turkey’ and ‘binge’ behaviour are reconsidered. The issue of detoxification is explicitly analysed here.

An empirical analysis of milk addiction.
We show the estimable rational addiction model tends to yield spurious evidence in favor of the rational addiction hypothesis when aggregate data are used. Direct application of the canonical model yields results seemingly indicative that non-addictive commodities such as milk, eggs, and oranges are rationally addictive. Monte Carlo simulation demonstrates that such results are likely to obtain...

There are currently effective, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved therapies for alcohol, nicotine, and opioid addiction. In some cases these therapeutics were rationally designed and tested using a combination of various animal models of addiction. In many cases, however, effective drug therapies for addiction were derived from the testing of compounds developed for other CNS diso...
متن کاملShould informed consent be based on rational beliefs?
Our aim is to expand the regulative ideal governing consent. We argue that consent should not only be informed but also based on rational beliefs. We argue that holding true beliefs promotes autonomy. Information is important insofar as it helps a person to hold the relevant true beliefs. But in order to hold the relevant true beliefs, competent people must also think rationally. Insofar as inf...
متن کاملOne cycles on rationally connected varieties
We prove that every curve on a separably rationally connected variety is rationally equivalent to a (non-effective) integral sum of rational curves. That is, the Chow group of 1-cycles is generated by rational curves. Applying the same technique, we also show that the Chow group of 1-cycles on a separably rationally connected Fano complete intersections of index at least 2 is generated by lines...
متن کاملFoliations and Rational Connectedness in Positive Characteristic
In this paper, the technique of foliations in characteristic p is used to investigate the difference between rational connectedness and separable rational connectedness in positive characteristic. The notion of being freely rationally connected is defined; a variety is freely rationally connected if a general pair of points can be connected by a free rational curve. It is proved that a freely r...
